2009-2010 WO Development Program

What is the WO Development Program?

  • Mandatory evaluation at each event
  • Development Team selected by March 1, 2010
  • Training Seminar for all registered participants, their coaches and parents
  • Possible out-of-section competition for Development Team Members
  • All participants must enter 2 competitions:
    1. John McKay Memorial Invitational *
    2. Charles Dover Memorial Invitational
    3. Dennis Silverthorne Memorial Invitational *

* Men, Dance, Pairs mandatory to enter John McKay and Dennis Silverthorne competitions.

  • Registrations must be received by October 1, 2009
  • $40 program registration fee per category

The 3 Development Team competitions for the 2009-2010 season are:

1. To enter these events the appropriate application process must be followed.

2. Entry forms and information about the above competitions will be available on the Competitions Page.

This program is open to any home club WO skater who has passed the qualifying test in freeskate, dance or pairs. The program is directed to single skaters who are from 6 years of age to 11 years of age before July 1, 2009, and dance and pairs skaters who are 6 years of age or older before July 1, 2009.

Skaters can NOT compete at the 2010 Sectional Competition in the same
discipline but MAY compete in the Pre-Juvenile events.

What is the Development 'Select' Team?

The Development 'Select' Team is made up of skaters in singles, dance and pairs who have been selected through an evaluation process that includes competing in all three designated competitions and collecting points for their protocol and evaluations. John McKay Memorial Invitation and Dennis Silverthorne Memorial Invitational are the mandatory competitions.

The Development Team, once selected, may be invited to participate in a special spring seminar and/or competition. Development Team members will be eligible to purchase team vests once they have made the team.

  • Four (4) skaters or teams will be selected in all disciplines and categories.
  • If there is a tie, each entry will make the Team.
  • There may be one 'wildcard' for each category selected.

Program Goals

1. To provide enriched competitive experiences for young skaters in WO.
2. To provide assistance to young skaters, their parents and coaches with learning opportunities to aid in skaters’ competitive development.
3. To provide feedback and guidance for future development to the skaters.
4. To provide a seminar for skaters who are registered in the program.

Selection Process

  • Team selection will be made following the three competitions.
  • A point system will be used to calculate the results in determining the Team members.
  • All categories with more than one flight will be taken to a final flight.
  • Protocol points will be awarded for final flights only.
  • Evaluations will be given only for the flights and not the finals.
  • Results will be tabulated from Protocol placements and evaluation totals.
  • Written report cards will be given at each event with an interview from the evaluator.
  • A final report will be given including the two best performance scores.
  • Qualifications for events are based on age before July 1, 2009.
  • Test qualifications will be as of September 1, 2009.

Must not have reached 9th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Passed Preliminary Freeskate Test, but no Competitive Test.

Must not have reached 10th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Well balanced Preliminary program

Passed Junior Bronze Freeskate Test and may have passed a Competitive Test.

Must not have reached 11th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Music time: 2.5 minutes (+/- 10 sec)

Both partners may or may not have passed complete Preliminary Dances.

Equivalent to STARSkate Preliminary Dance.

Both partners must not have reached their 13th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Dances skated will be the same as STARSkate Preliminary event.

Compulsory Dances:
1. Dutch Waltz
2. Baby Blues

Both partners must have passed the complete Preliminary Dance test.

Equivalent to Pre-Juvenile Dance.

Both partners must not have reached 14th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Dances skated will be the same as Pre-Juvenile.

Both partners must NOT have passed any Pair Test.

Overhead lifts are not allowed.

Both partners must not have reached their 12th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Music time: 2.0 minutes (+/- 10 sec)

Well balanced STARSkate Introductory Pair program.

Both partners must have passed the complete Preliminary Freeskate test.

Both partners must NOT have passed any Pair test.

Both partners must not have reached their 14th birthday as of July 1, 2009.

Music time: 2.5 minutes (+/- 10 sec)

Well balanced Pre-Juvenile Pair free program.

  1. Registration forms for the WO Development Program must be completed and returned with the appropriate fee(s) to Skate Canada – Western Ontario section office by October 1, 2009. (237 Consortium Court, London, ON N6E 2S8)
  2. Registrations for entry in all Development Team competition categories must be sent to the Registrar of each event and be received by the closing date of the competition in which they are scheduled.
  3. Skaters must register for each competition separately. The appropriate entry process must be followed.
  4. ** John McKay Memorial and Dennis Silverthorne are the 2 mandatory competitions for Men, Dance and Pair skaters in the WO Development Progam. **
  5. Evaluation information from each event will be kept for future reference.
  6. Skaters must not have competed at the 2010 Sectionals in the same discipline pending the Skate Canada ruling for crossing disciplines. Any amendments and Regulation changes adopted by Skate Canada will be in effect for the program. Please note - All Level 3 skaters may enter Pre-Juvenile categories.
  7. There is information forwarded to you throughout the season, so please notify the WO office if your address changes.
