Technical Changes For 2015-2016

The 2015-2016 AdultSkate Pre-Event Technical Package is now available from Skate Canada. Some changes to note:

  • Based on feedback received over the past few years from skaters, coaches and officials, we will be piloting revisions to several of the categories and their pre-requisites. For the 2015-2016 season, test pre-requisites will be removed from all Adult categories. Skaters will self-identify their skill level and enter the appropriate category(ies) based on the technical program requirements and any recommendations that may be added to the category descriptions. It is expected that skaters will skate to their highest ability. This method is being piloted to alleviate the issues for skaters who took Skate Canada tests in the past but may no longer be able to skate at the level of the test. It also mirrors the entry method of the ISU adult competitions. Feedback from this pilot season will be collected and analyzed to determine actions for the 2016-2017 skating season.
  • Additional categories have been added to further encourage all levels of skaters to participate, including elite categories for former competitive skaters in free skating, singles and couples’ interpretive, and couples and solo dance.
  • Vocal music will be permitted for free skating categories

Promoting Adult Skating in Your Club

We've had a number of inquiries about starting up adult skating in our clubs. Here's a document prepared by Skate Canada that might help.

Adult Skating Programs

Adult skating is growing in popularity and more and more clubs are offering recreational, test and competitive opportunities to this segment of the population.
AdultSkate

Adults participate in CanSkate, STARSkate and CanPowerSkate programs as well as on Synchronized Skating teams. Adult championships currently provide opportunities to adult skaters to experience the challenge of a competition in a fun, social environment. Skate Canada is currently expanding its programming in this area.

Although adult-only sessions are ideal, many clubs share ice among programs very successfully. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Adult Learn-to-Skate with CanSkate, Preschool CanSkate
  • Adult Primary STARSkate with CanSkate
  • Adult STARSkate with STARSkate
  • Adult Synchro
